There have been plenty of noteworthy developments this year in the field of latest computer technology, and in this post, we’ll cover the 2010 new computer technology yet to be released- ‘Spoofing attack against WPA2’.
Spoofing attack against WPA2
Susceptibility in the WPA2 network called ‘Hole 196’ enables a user with authority to spoof data packets on the network. This allows intermediate hacks by impersonating another user and adding data into packets.
‘Hole 196’ is expected to be presented at ‘Blackhat Arsenal’ by the Senior Wireless Security Researcher of ‘Airtight Networks’ Mohammed Sohail Ahmed.
The detailed features of this hacking system ‘Hole 196’ are not yet available; however, it might be restricted to the WAP-EAP standard.
It may not have an effect on WPA2-PSK which is used on minor networks like home routers.
Overview of WPA2
WPA2 includes two kinds of packets-
• PTK-Pairwise Transient Keys
• GTK-Group Temporal Keys
PTK is used clients for safe-guarding unicast traffic while GTK is used for broadcast traffic. GTK cannot identify data counterfeit and address spoofing.
If a client counterfeits a GTK packet, then other clients will reply using MAC address of their own and private key information.
‘Hole 196’ is specific to page 196 of IEEE 802.11, and hence the name. All wireless traffic for a network should be monitored in order to safeguard it. This could be one of the biggest amongst the 2010 new computer technology developments
