Explorer excessive memory usage can pose serious performance issues and sometimes even cause your system to freeze suddenly.
Here are some of the possible remedies for the same.
Basically, you should understand that C-drive is meant for keeping junk and data that consumes lot of disk space. You should store data like music, videos, and pictures in other partitions and ensure that C-drive has sufficient space.
In case you’re not aware of the fact that the memory consumed for storage of files saved on desktop comes from C-drive, you must apply the same principle here, too. Avoid saving any bulky files on desktop.
Similarly, the Recycle Bin also belongs to the C-drive and you should frequently empty the Recycle Bin to avoid this problem.
Unintentional Sources of Troubles
Saving bulky files can be regarded as a direct fault of the user, but there are certain sources of trouble that may not be known to the user. For instance, if you have software like MySQL, Tally, or multiple antivirus programs, these will be running as background process even without being initiated by the user.
You need to set priorities and ensure that these programs don’t get initiated during system boot-up automatically but that you launch them individually.
Even the common Yahoo! Messenger program can cause the problem of excessive memory usage by Microsoft Explorer. Bulky software like Tally and Matlab can eat a good chunk of system resources causing excessive memory usage.
So, you must set preferences for all such programs to ensure that they don’t initiate automatically, but rather only open when you want them.

I don’t agree with you on this. I have seen things that contradict what you mention here.
