Due to presence of a plethora of RAM for laptop in the market, choosing the correct RAM for laptop/netbook/notebook may not be an easy task. So, here are some vital tips for choosing the correct RAM for laptop.

First up, let us take a look at all the memory formats for laptops and netbooks. Before the launch of DDR3 units, there were four memory formats viz – 100-pin, 144-pin, 200-pin DDR and 200-pin DDR2.
Now, depending upon the memory slot given in your laptop, you can pick a compatible RAM for laptop and again the maximum memory size may depend upon the capabilities of your laptop/netbook.
The DDR1 RAMs for laptop are almost outdated in the market, but if you’ve an age old laptop, there are good chances that it may not be compatible with the latest DDR3 and DDR2 RAM units.
However, for all the recent laptop models DDR2, SDRAM, and DDR3 RAM units can be put into use (again subject to compatibility of course!). The DDR2 memory units come in three different speeds – 400 MHz, 533 MHz and 667MHz.
Choosing the correct RAM unit for your laptop is extremely critical because by adding slower memory unit you can even accidentally slow down the overall speed of your laptop (which can be a nightmare for sure!).
Furthermore, DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3 units are not inter-compatible; so they can not work together. And, you should always bear this in mind, while trying to upgrade your RAM.
Buying a RAM unit for Apple Macintoshes may be a rather tedious job, because it involves several compatibility issues. More so, they have very minimal tolerance limit for working with incorrect RAM (whether it be speed or memory type). Consequently, the performance of a Mac may drop drastically due to installation of an incompatible memory unit.
